LISTED GRADE II
FORMER MILL

WG Carter worked with the new owners of this Grade II listed former mill house and their architects to create a beautiful unique 4 bedroomed family home in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside.

We totally refurbished and renovated the existing Grade II listed building and added a contemporary extension that makes the most of the property’s setting and views. This required significant structural works on the roof and main beams, as well as careful restoration of the fabric of the building.

Because of its proximity to water, with the old millrace running through the site, the additional challenges of accelerated deterioration of the infrastructure over the years and the flood risk, combined with the conservation requirements, demanded not just outstanding building expertise but also careful site management.

The old mill house was sympathetically restored with features like the exposed ceiling joints being preserved and stained to highlight the grain. We uncovered the former millrace, which we opened up for wine storage and carefully refurbished the windows. To ready the house for today’s living standards, we completely replaced the plumbing, heating, electrics and alarm system and installed underfloor heating. We combined timber and stone floor finishes on the ground floor and prepared the first floor for carpet.

A stunning new ultra modern extension adds a further recreation room with a dining area complete with a new chimney and wood-burning stove. With a piled foundation design, it is joined to the original mill house with a glass link and has a large glazed bay window with seating to admire the views.

Preserving the character of this unique historic building and adding a brand new extension, combines WG Carter’s skills of restoration with the latest building techniques and writes a new chapter in the history of this mill house.
